Why Cloth Diapers?

I know, I know. You want to know why on earth you would use cloth products when there are so many disposable things on the market? Isn't disposable easier?

Yes.

And no.

On the one hand I don't think that many people will argue with you that disposables have their advantages. Throw them away and you're done. The end. But then, there are some drawbacks to disposable. Some babies are sensitive to certain brands of diapers. When this happens many times the baby's skin will dictate that you buy the most expensive diapers. Ever had to stretch those last couple of diapers until the next paycheck? Or make an emergency run to the store because you ran out? Then there's the extra trash. With many cities now restricting how much trash you can throw out, it can be a big advantage not to be throwing out diapers every day. Especially when you have more than one child in diapers.

Cloth diapers have come a long way since the days when our grandmothers used them. You no longer have to dunk the diapers in the toilet or soak them in bleach. I once had a friend tell me that she would have to get her mom to get the diapers out of the toilet where they were soaking just so she could go to the bathroom! Talk about a pain!

While you can still buy the old style diapers that require a degree in origami to fold them, or even the prefold diapers that made things a little easier, many people prefer to use the fitted style diapers. Ever since I found the pocket one-sized diapers I was hooked. I had used prefolds and covers up to that point, but I have to admit that it was borderline in the saving money area. The one size diapers allow you to buy 12 diapers for one child, and in theory, those will last from infancy through potty-training. The exceptions will be the tiny babies and the large toddlers who refuse to potty train!

While we're on the potty training subject, many people say that their children potty train faster when they were in cloth diapers. I can't speak on the because all of mine have gone from cloth to potty training.

Is cost an issue for you? I will admit that cloth diapers requires the upfront cost vs. the one pack of diapers at a time method. But to give you a cost comparison on cloth vs. disposable I'll use a cheap case scenario. If you go through an average of 4 diapers a day, at the low cost of $.15/diaper, you'll spend $219 per year in diapers alone (not counting wipes). Multiply that by 2.5 years in diapers and you get $547.50 in the cost of diapers. Compare that to $144/12 diapers, $10/10 wipes, $5/5 fleece inserts, $17.50/lg & med wet diaper bags, and $12/changing pad. And many of those things are optional! That's $188.50 from start to finish. And, if you take good care of them, many of those things can be used for a second child!

Lastly, you may be asking why buy diapers from Cloth by Kim. Here are just a few reasons:

  • Diapers are guaranteed for three years.
  • Diapers are only $12, which is a low cost for a pocket one size diaper. We buy the deals that we can find and pass them along to you!
  • 50% of the profit goes to adoption funds of families that we know or have heard of! Right now we personally know 3 families that are adopting internationally and trust us! That's not cheap! After these friends have completed their adoptions Cloth by Kim will find new families to send the money to. There are so many orphans in the world and this is our way of helping those children find their forever families.
